01

What is a coworking retreat?

A week away where the laptop comes too. Focused work by day, real connection by night, somewhere the scenery does half the work.

The Concept

Work meets wonder

Take your remote team to an inspiring location for a week of focused work and team bonding. Mornings: deep work in a curated coworking space. Afternoons: activities, workshops, or exploration. Evenings: dinners and connection. Return home recharged and aligned.

For Teams

Why companies do this

Remote teams need face time. Annual or quarterly retreats replace the water cooler — build the relationships that make async communication work. Solve big problems together in person, celebrate wins, plan the next quarter. Retreats are shown to boost retention meaningfully.

For Solo

The personal retreat

Take yourself to a coworking space in another city or country for one to four weeks. Work by day, explore evenings and weekends. Digital-nomad lite — refresh your perspective without quitting your job. Increasingly popular in the remote-first era.

The Math

Return on investment

Budget roughly $2,000–$5,000 per person for a week — travel, lodging, workspace, meals, activities. Compare that to the cost of losing one employee. A single good retreat can prevent turnover, align strategy, and build culture worth many times the spend.

02

Top retreat destinations

Six places that consistently deliver fast internet, good food, and a reason to step away from the screen.

38.7°N · 9.1°W

Lisbon, Portugal

Europe’s coworking capital — affordable, beautiful, great weather and fast internet. The time zone works for US East Coast morning overlap. Dozens of spaces, from Outsite to independents. Lodging roughly $50–$80/night.

20.2°N · 87.5°W

Tulum, Mexico

Beach, jungle, and cenotes with affordable luxury and a growing coworking scene. A short flight from US cities, visa-free for Americans, around $60–$120/night. Best November–April; bring a backup hotspot — connectivity wavers outside the spaces.

30.3°N · 97.7°W

Austin, Texas

No passport needed and SXSW energy year-round, with 100+ coworking spaces and a famous food-and-music scene. Outdoor breaks at Barton Springs, Town Lake, and the Hill Country. Best March–May and October–November.

8.5°S · 115.2°E

Bali, Indonesia

The original digital-nomad destination — Ubud for culture, Canggu for surf. Legendary coworking and beautiful villas from $30–$60/night. The 12-hour offset is the main challenge for US teams, so it shines for async-first crews.

35.6°N · 82.6°W

Asheville, NC

Mountain air, craft beer, and a real arts scene with a growing remote-work community. More affordable than the coasts, with the Blue Ridge Parkway for outdoor days and solid coworking options. Best June–October.

6.2°N · 75.6°W

Medellín, Colombia

The “City of Eternal Spring” — spring-like weather all year, modern infrastructure, and excellent coworking from $40–$70/night. A three-to-four-hour flight from Miami, safe in the tourist and business districts.

03

Planning a retreat

The logistics that separate a memorable week from an expensive one.

Timeline

When to book

Book two to three months ahead for team retreats. Choose dates that avoid major holidays and product launches. Monday-arrival, Friday-departure is standard; some teams do Sunday–Thursday for cheaper flights. Five days is the sweet spot.

Budget

The breakdown

Flights: $300–$800/person domestic, $500–$1,500 international. Lodging: $50–$150/night. Coworking: $20–$40/day. Meals: $40–$80/day. Activities: $50–$100 total. All in: roughly $1,500–$4,000 per person for five days.

Lodging

Where to stay

Villas or large rentals for small teams (under 15); hotels for larger groups. Look for fast Wi-Fi, common areas for evening hangouts, quiet rooms for calls, and kitchen access. Book early for the best selection — group hotel rates usually need 10+ rooms.

Activities

Structure the days

Balance structured and unstructured time. Cooking classes, hikes, a surf lesson, a walking tour, a volunteer project, a special team dinner. Don’t over-schedule — the best bonding tends to happen in the unplanned moments between sessions.
